More herbs and less salt day 29 August 2016
August 29th is More Herbs, Less Salt Day! Eating less salt is a good idea for everyone regardless of age or overall health. The benefits of cutting back on salt can improve short-term and long-term heart health, reduce fluid retention, and actually increase your taste bud’s sensitivity to other flavours. Your food doesn’t have to be left bland and unappetizing without the trusty salt shaker!
Combining a variety of herbs and spices with a few other staple ingredients like garlic, onion, and citrus fruit, not only provides flavour with very few calories, but other benefits too. Herbs are full of antioxidants and have an anti-inflammatory effect, which can reduce pain, disease, and improve circulation, immunity, and digestion.
This day is typically celebrated in America and was created by celebrity actor Thomas Roy and his wife. Between them they have created 80 “special days” which are listed on wikipedia.
